![]() All other herding dogs in Germany at the time were referred to by this term, and they were known as Altdeutsche Schäferhunde or Old German herding dogs. Breed’s nameĪccording to Wikipedia Von Stephanitz named the breed Deutscher Schäferhund, which translates to “German Shepherd Dog.” The name derives from the breed’s traditional duty of assisting shepherds in herding and protecting sheep. During World War I, the German Shepherd acted as a Red Cross dog, courier, savior, guard, supply bearer, and sentry. Von Stephanitz persuaded the German government to use the breed by using his military links. He was determined that his breed would continue to be used as a working dog, and he decided that the dog’s future would be in law enforcement and military service dogs. The dog’s powerful build and intelligence so impressed von Stephanitz that he established the Verein für Deutsche Schaferhunde to establish a breed from Horand’s progeny.Īlthough von Stephanitz intended for his breed to be used as herding dogs, he witnessed a decline in demand for such dogs as Germany became more industrialized. He immediately purchased the dog, named Hektor Linksrhein. In 1899, Von Stephanitz was at a dog show when he observed a wolf-like dog. What he didn’t see was a dog with all of those features. Von Stephanitz observed many good herding dogs who were athletic, intelligent, and capable. ![]() Stephanitz studied British breeding methods, which are known for generating superb herding dogs, and toured Germany, attending dog shows and witnessing German-type herding dogs. In 1898, Von Stephanitz left the military and began his second career, and what would become his passion, experimenting with dog breeding to create a superior German herding dog. However, as von Stephanitz pointed out, no one had developed the region’s herding dogs into a separate breed. Sheepherders would travel for days to breed their female dogs to a prominent sire, and certain dogs were legendary for their skill. Von Stephanitz was a career captain in the German cavalry, and when developing the German Shepherd he had only one goal in mind, creating a German breed that would be unrivaled as a herding dog.įarmers in Germany, as well as the rest of Europe, relied on dogs to drive and defend their cattle for centuries before captain Max von Stephanitz arrived. The German Shepherd is a relatively new breed, having been developed in 1899 by Commander Max von Stephanitz. The history of the German Shepherd or Pastor Aleman is very interesting.

Then even if both subtitles are shown one above the other, they are both in English. Does anyone know why this is happening? What I don’t understand is that it begins translating but only does it for a couple of minutes. The test button didn’t work and I’m not sure what this was testing. Then I tried to check the ‘google translate’ option clicking on the ‘test’, open file, reload application and login. I prevented all processes except for PotPlayer but this didn’t work. So I thought maybe if I limit the bandwidth of other programmes it Google translate would keep translating. Now, the only online reference I could find is that in a recent update it said “online subtitle translation” would not ‘browse slowly’ in the new version. Illustrated with photographs and architectural plans or sketches, each garden is described and analyzed by author Mira Locher, herself an architect and a scholar well versed in Japanese culture.Ĭelebrating the accomplishments of a major, world-class designer, Zen Gardens also serves as something of a master class in Japanese garden design and appreciation: how to perceive a Japanese garden, how to understand one, even how to make one yourself. Masuno achieved fame for his work in Japan, but he is becoming increasingly known internationally, and in 2011 completed his first commission in the United States which is shown here. It presents 37 major gardens around the world in a wide variety of types and settings: traditional and contemporary, urban and rural, public spaces and private residences, and including temple, office, hotel and campus venues. ![]() This beautiful book, illustrated with more than 400 drawings and color photographs, is the first complete retrospective of Masuno's work to be published in English. Each becomes a Zen garden, "a special spiritual place where the mind dwells." In each project, his work as a designer is inseparable from his Buddhist practice. He has worked in ultramodern urban hotels and in some of Japan's most famous classic gardens. He is celebrated for his unique ability to blend strikingly contemporary elements with the traditional design vernacular. Shunmyo Masuno, Japan's leading garden designer, is at once Japan's most highly acclaimed landscape architect and an 18th-generation Zen Buddhist priest, presiding over daily ceremonies at the Kenkoji Temple in Yokohama. ![]() Georgia EMC is the statewide trade association representing the state's 41 electric cooperatives, Oglethorpe Power Corp., Georgia Transmission Corp. “But we can do cartoony violence - TNT, the Acme stuff. However, Peter Browngardt, the series executive producer and showrunner, told the outlet, “We’re not doing guns.” The new series “Looney Tunes Cartoons,” which premiered last week on the streaming service HBO Max, will feature the cartoon’s characteristic violence – using sticks of dynamite, booby traps and the iconic anvils and bank safes dropped onto characters, The New York Times reported last week. Art © Warner Bros.In a new series based on the beloved “Looney Tunes” cartoons, the classic character Elmer Fudd will no longer carry a gun. Today in Toons: Every day's an anniversary! Although he headlined about a dozen and a half issues between 1953 and '62, in the vast majority of his comic book appearances, starting with Dell's Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies Comics #1 (1941), he was basically just a foil for Bugs Bunny.Īnd so he remains - not truly a star in his own right, perhaps, but one of the best-known second bananas in cartoondom.īACK to Don Markstein's Toonopedia Home Page He was more recently seen, along with the majority of his Looney Tunes cohorts, with Michael Jordan, in Space Jam.Įlmer followed a similar path in comics. Two years later, in Tiny Toon Adventures, he became the mentor and favorite teacher of his counterpart there, Elmyra Duff. After that, it was just TV reruns for him, until 1988, when he made a cameo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. (Hal Smith, the dog on Davey & Goliath, did Elmer in a few cartoons, but very imperfectly.) In any case, Elmer's last cartoon was What's My Lion? (1961), directed by Friz Freleng. Or perhaps it was because Bryan died in 1959, and even the amazingly versatile Mel Blanc was unable to replace him satisfactorily. It was perhaps because of this familiarity that Elmer was used less often in the 1950s than he had been in the '40s. By that time, audiences were so familiar with the relationship between the two, that it could be parodied and stylized almost to the point of abstraction, and still get tremendous laughs. But perhaps his finest moment occurred in Jones's What's Opera, Doc? (1957), in which he hunted Bugs to the strains of Wagner's Ring Cycle. Elmer's dimwitted wimpiness contrasted beautifully with Bugs's casual confidence in his ability to control any situation.Įlmer's only Oscar nomination was for Avery's A Wild Hare (1940), which introduced the fully-formed Bugs. But it was Bugs with whom he shared the majority of his cartoon appearances. Occasionally, he didn't hunt anybody at all, as when he parodied Leopold Stowkowski's Fantasia role in Corny Concerto (1943), directed by Robert Clampett. He often locked horns with Daffy Duck, starting with Jones's To Duck or Not to Duck (1943). To this day, phrases first heard there, such as "Wabbit twacks!" and "Be vewy, vewy quiet! I'm hunting wabbits!" will evoke a smile from cartoon lovers throughout the English-speaking world.īugs was not Elmer's only intended prey. But his character was almost fully formed, and Elmer's Candid Camera set the tone for a partnership that was to last decades. Appearance-wise, the "Wabbit" was still in his formative stage. It was in that cartoon that Elmer first met the Bunny that was to become Bugs. The character still had a little evolving to do, but you'd know him anywhere. It all came together in Elmer's Candid Camera (1940), directed by Chuck Jones.
